Sapienza is always eager to sponsor events organised for a good cause. This spring, we were one of the sponsors for the “Sunshine in Nosy Komba” Tournament organised at the end of April at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC). Besides the tournaments for tennis, squash and football, the participants had the opportunity to take part in all kinds of fun activities, such as dance workshops, Zumba and workout classes, as well as a treasure hunt.
This event was organised by the “Sunshine in Nosy Komba initiative”. The initiative was created in 2011 by ESTEC employees to support the global development project in Nosy Komba (an island off the north west coast of Madagascar), with projects on Education, Health care and Sustainable development.
For the last four years, “Sunshine in Nosy Komba” has been helping more than 350 children get access to education with the funds raised through the tournament. This year the team managed to raise a total of 16.886 €, which will be used to:
- Help 3 schools to stay open for the next year and sustain 11 teachers
- Cover costs of the school facilities (such as the canteen, and cafeteria), for higher quality food for the students
- Support the renovation of the school dorms, where more than 80 kids from other places or orphans stay
- Contribute to the construction of an incubator for local companies
