Global Environment Monitoring
The Earth’s atmosphere, oceans and landscapes are evolving rapidly, with human activities playing a major role. Monitoring and forecasting these changes is critical for enabling governments, the private sector and the civil society to take informed decisions about climate, energy, food security, disaster management and other challenges.
Decision makers and managers must have access to the information they need, when they need it and in the format they can use.
Today the earth is monitored by space-based Earth Observation System. But the current system for collecting, storing and analysis and sharing the resulting observations remains fragmented, incomplete or redundant. A number of global initiatives and programmes have been launched to address this gap and develop a global, coordinated, comprehensive and sustained environmental system.
Sapienza has been engaged since 2006 in some of these flagships initiatives programmes:
- GEOSS
- GMES
- International Disaster Charter
Sapienza has designed and built the ESA-FAO GEOportal offering the entry point to access geospatial data, imagery and information systems and services by connecting users to existing databases and portals relevant to field of interest

Sapienza has designed and built the GMES Space Component (GSC) Data Access portal providing the interface for accessing the Earth Observation products from the GMES Space Component. The system overall space capacity relies on several EO missions contributing to GMES, and it is continuously evolving, with new missions becoming available along time and others ending and/or being replaced.

Sapienza has re-launched the International Charter which aims at providing a unified and coordinated system of space data acquisition and delivery to those affected by natural or man-made disasters.

Sapienza’s long term business strategy is to remain a strong participant in the implementation of information services dealing with environment and security issues and is looking to build partnerships with complementary field experts to achieve this goal.
